Mapping flood risk: rural land, property insurance and the contestation of environmental knowledge claims

Link to project: Understanding Environmental Knowledge Controversies

The project will explore three research questions.

  • How does the mapping of flood risk generated by the commercial imperatives of the insurance industry, compare with that generated by the policy imperatives of the Environment Agency?
  • What are the modelling assumptions and visualisation methods employed in the digital mappings of flood risk adopted by the ABI, and how are these varied/challenged within the insurance industry and by the customers/public ho use them?
  • How do the models/maps of flood risk affect the management and value of rural land in terms of housing (e.g. housebuilding policy, property markets and householder confidence) and agriculture (e.g. insurance zoning, claim restrictions and land management)?
